Breadwell is one of a multitude of coffee shops situated right near my workplace. A differentiator is its great selection of teas (including a pretty great chai if you are that way inclined). I recently noticed a new inclusion in the cakes cabinet – teeny tiny little macarons. Obviously they were calling for me to try them.
The other day [...]

Stop press! A great macaron? Thanks Chimmy’s
Posted in Taste test: macarons, tagged Chimmys, macaron on 1 March, 2010 | 2 Comments »
Regular readers will be aware that since this blog’s inception I have been on a quest to find a great macaron in Melbourne. Thus far, it has been reasonably unsuccessful and the general vibe of my macaron reviews has been disappointment and as some have put it, negativity. All of this from a person who has [...]
Wye River General Store’s macaron

I spent a fair chunk of my childhood in the little coastal town of Wye River, on the Great Ocean Road about 30 minutes past Lorne. Back in the day it was a sleepy hollow, with a run-down little store, the Rookery Nook hotel (replete with sticky carpet and arcade games) and the pinball parlour [...]
Hardware Societe: a mixed bag

I caught up with my friends Z & B for another mid-week, city breakfast. Z has become quite the fan of Melbourne Gastronome (aren’t we all?) so after reading the review of Hardware Societe, we decided we had to try it for ourselves.
Hardware Societe is situated on Hardware Street (not Lane!) in the city across [...]
Cristina Re’s macaron – no flavour
Posted in Taste test: macarons, tagged macaron, Collingwood, Cristina Re on 7 January, 2010 | 8 Comments »
A new little cafe/store recently opened in the back streets of Collingwood. I kept walking past the place when it was closed and was a little intrigued. Unfortunately my ‘research’ (google) advised me that the store was in fact a new concept store for stationer Cristina Re – the store is called “where a girl goes” [...]
Baker D Chirico’s macaron

I recently read about Baker D Chirico’s pop up store and very excitedly headed there for a macaron hit. The macarons at Baker D Chirico had been recommended to me, but unfortunately, being the insular Northsider that I am, I rarely make it over to St Kilda.
Baker D Chirico’s pop up store is right near my work [...]
Chimmy’s macarons – meh

I arrived at work the other day to find a little surprise from my workmate S. An avid reader of the blog, she spied some macarons at Chimmys and brought them in for me.
I have previously tried Chimmy’s macarons and was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, these two weren’t as good. As you can see from the [...]
Shocolate’s mammoth macaron

On the weekend, fate brought me to a macaron. I had been finishing up my Christmas shopping (yes!) in Brunswick St and was heading home to Collingwood laden with parcels, walking in a light drizzle. A red light prevented me from crossing Johnston so I decided to turn right from Brunswick St and found myself [...]
Cafe Vue at Heide.

On Tuesday, it was frequented by the “glitterati” (which I am always dubious about in Melbourne – are we talking a couple of footballers and a weather girl?) by Saturday morning there were more staff than patrons and about half the patrons were under 5. Welcome to Cafe Vue at Heide!
I was keen to try [...]
Cafe Vue’s macaron – where’s the filling?
Posted in Taste test: macarons, tagged Cafe Vue, macaron, Melbourne cafes, Melbourne CBD on 12 November, 2009 | 2 Comments »
There has been a lot of macaron testing lately. Tasting Cafe Vue’s macaron was due to my lovely friend (and reader!) CC who noticed the macarons on offer when she bought her morning coffee and picked a couple up for me as a surprise. Purchasing the macarons she was confused when asked “what colour do you want?”, replying err “brown [...]
