I really like Mart 130. Mart is situated on a tram line at stop 130 (hence the anagram – Mart) it has a quirkily decorated dining room, with a beautiful covered balcony at the back. Food is great, service is friendly. My only qualms are that it isn’t located near me and it is too popular for its own good, usually you will face a decent wait for brekky here.
On a whim, we decided to head to Mart on the Monday of the long weekend, to celebrate lovely A’s engagement. The long weekend factor was a boon, Mart was busy but not nearly as busy as usual and after a mere 5 minute wait the five of us were ensconced in the rather gorgeous square booth at the end of the balcony. It was a beautifully sunny Winter’s morning.
Breakfast options abound, with porridge, bircher, muesli, french toast, pancakes, corn fritters and loads of eggs on offer. I was tempted by the omelette of the day with chorizo, fetta, basil and pumpkin ($16.90):
This was gorgeous. Soft chunks of sweet baked pumpkin, salty fetta and spicy chorizo. Really really good.
The lovely A had the corn fritters with bacon, sour cream and coriander ($16.90), A ordered a side of avocado as well:
These babies won breakfast of the year in The Age’s cheap eats 2008 and they are still damn good. Light, crisp but not oily fritters with lashings of bacon. I definitely had food envy.
My other breakfasting companions A, R and N ordered a menagerie of egg dishes:
Coffee was good. Service was slightly confused at times (although I just think one of the waitresses was new) but it was an altogether pleasing breakfast. My tip is try to go early to avoid the crowds… but in any event, Mart is definitely worth the wait!

Ooh, I like the huge pot of avocado they served with the corn fritters. Mart is on the other side of town for me but I’ve heard such great things about it that I might just have to jump on the 96 and try it out. How early is early? I hate waiting for breakfast….

those fritters look like they are to die for! I have heard of this place before but never been. Think it’s time to make a trip over! Is the place tiny?
Place isn’t tiny, there is a large balcony at the back, a few tables inside and one or two little tables out the front. It is just really popular, so tends to be busy. I would recommend going earlier in the morning rather than later.
You can have a coffee out the front while you are waiting…

Oh gosh, the poached eggs and corn fritters look absolutely amazing! I am such a sucker for corn fritters, a bit out of the way indeed…but….
Mart130 is one of our favourite places! The corn fritters there are to die for! We were supposed to go there early June, but we were lazy getting out of bed and saw a massive queue outside and bailed to Dr Jekylls!
