I recently headed to Amsterdam St cafe for a catch up breakfast with some girlfriends. I had read positive things about Amsterdam St cafe on Melbourne Gastronome and more recently MEL Hot or Not, as a plus, the lovely Sugadeaux supplies the cafe with her gorgeous cupcakes (although, unfortunately Sugadeaux is currently in the States, so no cupcakes were available when we visited).

The cafe is situated (surprisingly enough) on Amsterdam St, near the corner of Church St. It is a fire engine red building which helps to locate the place in the quiet back street, next to some motor body repairers.

The space is warm and light filled, with polished boards and streaks of red throughout. Service was good natured, we were there for almost two hours – first waiting for everyone to arrive and then gossiping and drinking too many coffees. The waitress found a perfect spot for the pram and no one batted an eyelid when the rather gorgeous and well behaved X had a little wail (there were actually quite a few toddlers at the cafe when we visited).

On to the food, prepare for an onslaught of deliciousness. G opted for French toast with bacon and maple syrup:

E & E opted for the breakfast burrito:

B had the omelette with mushroom and fetta:

I had the potato rosti, with bacon, poached eggs, cheese, spinach leaves and roast tomatoes:

This was really good. Nice, crispy rosti and oozy poached eggs. This disappeared in an unladylike amount of time.

Overall, a great little cafe that I look forward to visiting again. It was a particular joy to find a cafe that was not insanely crazy on a Sunday morning and where I could easily get a park nearby (yes I am an old woman).

Hmmmm….bit of a contrast between omelette above in this post and omelette below in Mess Hall post.

Ha! I didn’t even think of that, but yes, the Amsterdam St omelette looks much more appealing!

  3. Thanks for the mention. That plate of French toast is calling my name!
